A Sermon for Good Friday, A.D. 2021

(This is an adaptation of the sermon for Good Friday held in the Kreuzkirche in Weimar, Germany, in 2020.)

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from Jesus Christ, God’s Son, the Crucified One.

Allow me to invite you to take a deep breath. And, one more…

The world right now seems to have become rather adept at holding its collective breath as all of humanity wonders who will next bear which variant of the corona virus and what will it mean for her, for him, for them. Some have corona in their bodies and don’t even know. Others are quite aware and are fighting for their lives and hundreds of thousands have already breathed their last and given up their spirit. This corona has caused us pain, fear, death, and has made us put physical distance between us and strangers, our neighbors, friends, and in many cases our loved ones. This corona has become a sign of death and has given so many a feeling of desperation that was unknown before. If we had the means, we hoarded what we could wherever possible. Remember how we struggled one year ago to make sure we had one more bottle of anti-viral gel for our hands. One more package of toilet paper. Food for weeks. We hunkered down and prayed to God that the storm would blow over and we would remain unscathed. We learned how to wash our hands and wear our masks. We have made masks…
